All About Ryobi Batteries & Chargers

Ryobi 18V Battery

There are many Ryobi cordless power tools that use 18V batteries.  Many of the 18V batteries can be used on multiple Ryobi power tools.  There are different models of batteries to choose from. One of the most commonly used Ryobi 18V batteries is the P 103 Lithium Ion battery.

Product Description, Benefits and Use:

Ryobi P103 18-Volt Li-Ion battery can hold charge four times longer than most NiCad batteries which minimizes the need to recharge your battery.  P 103 Li-ion batteries can sit between the jobs without needing a recharge before use.  With a NiCad battery they may become discharged if they set for an extended period of time.

The P 103 Li-ion battery gives you 20% extra performance than a standard NiCad battery. The Li-ion batteries are comparatively small and compact and are 25% to 45 % lighter in weight then many NiCad or NiMH batteries. The lower weight helps to relieve fatigue due to the extra weight.  You will certainly appreciate the lighter weight batteries when you do any kind of overhead projects.   You can use these P 103 batteries for many of the Ryobi cordless power tools.

User Guidance:

P 103 has a 1300 mAh rating and should  last 1.3 hours. In general, the larger mAh indicated the longer time the battery could be used before recharging. However, several factors affect how long the charge will last after a full recharge. These include age of the battery, number of times it has been recharged, working temperature and use.

Storage:

Normally a Li-Ion battery will start deteriorating without charge after nine months. The old stock battery will operate only at 70% of its rated capacity. Ryobi batteries are marked with a date code stamp that indicates the manufacturing date of the battery. You should not buy a Li-ion battery, which is older than 9 months.

Li-ion batteries will degrade in performance when the charge goes between 2.8 volts to 4.2 volts. Ryobi P 103 has five cells for a safe voltage between 14V and 21V. If the batteries remain idle, they can also discharge slowly. It is better to store these batteries after full charging. A fully charged Li-ion battery will take over a year before it self-discharges and drops below 2.8V. You should top up an idle battery periodically. It is better to have a one-hour charger and a set of two or three batteries, if you do the jobs where the battery may drain out in an hour.

Charging:

You must use a P113 or other recommended charger to charge Ryobi 18 V P 103 battery.  Charge the battery until the green light on the charger lights on. Only use the power supply that is recommended with the charger.
